The National Translation Centre (NTC) is a national cultural institution set up by the Decree no. 401/2006 dated February 3, 2006. It is a public non-administrative institution, enjoying legal personality and financial autonomy, and operating under the direction of the Ministry of Culture and Heritage Preservation. It is a centre for information, training, documentation and studies.
The Technical Committees (set up by a decision). Their role is to determine translation strategies. They consist of three committees composed of academics, scientists, and cultural figures as follows:
1/ The Translation Strategies Committee for Consolidating Tunisia’s cultural Presence on the International Scene:
Its responsibility consists in suggesting translation plans capable of introducing Tunisian production in the fields of literature, arts, history and civilization, and the translation into different languages thereof. Prof. Khalifa Chater is currently chairing this committee, whish consists of three specialised sub-committees:
a) The sub-committee for the translation of Tunisian literary masterpieces. Prof. Mohamed Ghozzi is currently the group coordinator.
b) The sub-committee for the translation of works on Tunisian history, humanities, and social sciences. Prof. Hédi Timoumi is now the group coordinator.
c) The sub-committee for the translation of works in the areas of Tunisian thought and civilization. Prof. Amel Grami is at present the group coordinator.
2/ The Translation Strategies Committee for Intellectual and Cultural Modernization:
Its task is to suggest translation plans capable of introducing both the Tunisian reader and the Arab reader to the most important achievements of modernization in the areas of literature, philosophical thought, linguistics, human and social sciences, as well as civilization studies in general. Prof. Hamadi Samoud is for the time being the chair of this committee, which consists of the following four specialised sub-committees:
a) The sub-committee for the translation of world literary masterpieces. Prof. Mohamed Kameleddine Gaha is currently the group coordinator.
b) The sub-committee for the translation of philosophical works. Prof. Jeleleddine Saïd is at the present the group coordinator.
c) The sub-committee for the translation of reference books in linguistics, terminology and lexicology. Prof. Hichem Rifi is currently the group coordinator.
d) The sub-committee for the translation of books on humanities, social sciences and civilization. The group is in the process of formation. Prof. Mohamed Haddad is now the group coordinator
3/ The Translation Strategy Committee for Keeping Up-to-date with Developments in Scientific Knowledge, Technology, and International Relations:
Its task is to suggest translation plans with a view to introducing the reader to the major productions in the fields of universal scientific thought, and matters relating to scientific progress, environmental problems, the impact of technological progress on people’s lives and international relations challenges; namely issues of energy, wealth and water. Prof. Rafaa Ben Achour is for the time being the chair of this committee which will consist of three specialised sub-commitees, namely:
a) The sub-committee for the translation of major reference books in the fields of science and technology.
b) The sub-committee for the translation of studies on bioethics.
c) The sub-committee for the translation of international relations studies.
